History Of These 2 Breeds

If you look at a Boston Terrier one of your first thoughts might be that its a miniature English Bulldog.

This would be a correct assumption because they acquired some of their traits from the bulldog breed when they were bred with an English Terrier.

At some point the English Bulldog/English Terrier mix made its way to the United States.

A couple owners living in the state of Boston bred their dogs.

Which produced offspring that were also bred over and over bringing about the breed we now recognize as the Boston Terrier.

Now the French Bulldog also has its origin from England as well.

They were brought to France where they became popular.

Through breeding the french were able to create a dog that was smaller and more agile.

Then American visitors to France fell in love with the breed and brought them back to the United States.

So as you can see both of these breeds originated from England and were brought to different countries where they were bred to become the breeds they are today.

Differences Between The Boston Terrier and French Bulldog

First lets talk about the physical aspects of the two breeds and what distinguishes them from one another.

First of one of the more noticeable differences are going to be their heads.

Head Shape

The shape of a Boston Terriers head is going to be more round while the shape of a French Bulldogs head is going to be more square.

Both breeds heads are proportionate to their bodies.

Another difference that you may notice is the shape of the ears between the two breeds of dogs.

The Boston Terriers ears are going to be pointed while the ears of the French Bulldog are going to be rounded at the top.

You will often hear the Frenchies ears referred to as “bat ears” because of the way they look.

The body of french bulldog is going to be more stocky and they sit lower to the ground due to their shorter legs.

The Boston Terrier on the other hand will have a thinner body that sits up higher of the ground due to having longer legs than the Frenchie.

When it comes to color variations the French Bulldog will have more variations and it quite common to see them a solid color such as all black or all white.

When it comes to the Boston Terrier colors your less likely to see a solid colored one although they do exist.

Activity & Temperament

When it comes to playing and being active you will find that the Boston Terrier is the more energetic dog and is more likely to be a better companion for owners that are active.

The Frenchie still likes to play and be active but you would find that they won’t have the same energy level as the Bostie.

Personality wise the Frenchie is going to be a more stubborn dog with a mind of its own making them a little harder to train than a Bostie.

This can be a problem when your trying to potty train them.

Cost – French Bulldogs vs Boston Terrier

When it comes to buying a puppy your going find that the cost of a standard Frenchie is going to be more than a Bostie.

For example your standard color Boston Terrier will be between $800 to $1500 while you can expect to pay a little more for a French Bulldog ranging which will range from $1500 to $2500.

Of course if your going to be buying pure bred show dogs or dogs that were bred for specific rare colors the prices are going to be higher.
